"Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," Barry White, Can't Get Enough, Island/Mercury Records, 1974
THE DEAL: It's been a great week. Draining, but still great. The snow is gone, replaced by snow. Annnnnnnnd I head to New Orleans tomorrow. Wooo hooo! I mean, sure it's after Mardi Gras and the NBA All Star weekend, but still ... I'm going. Plus, I like it better that not so many folks will be there while I am. Gives me a chance to actually walk around without stepping on people. lol Here's some Barry for your Saturday. Enjoy!
"Can't Tell Me Nothing," Kanye West, Graduation, Roc-a-fella Records, 2007
THE DEAL: It's Friday, it's snowing here in New York, and one of my most favorite people in the world is having her retirement party today. I'm hosting a party for her down at the job this afternoon. It kinda sucks that I've been on the road so much and not been able to spend time with her during her last month. I'm gonna miss her. A lot. You can't tell me nothin'.
"Can't Knock the Hustle," Jay-Z, Reasonable Doubt, EMI America Records, 1996
THE DEAL: It's Thursday, and I'm finally headed back home for a few days before heading out to New Orleans. It's been a very, very interesting month. One that I'll never forget. Yesterday, I got to see a statue of the "Aggie Four", a group of four young men who, back in the '60s, staged a sit-in at the local Woolworth's lunch counter after being refused service for being black. And even though they feared for their lives after the sit-in, I still can't knock their hustle.
"Can't Be Wasting My Time," Mona Lisa (feat. Lost Boyz), Don't Be A Menace ... Soundtrack, Polygram International Records, 1996
THE DEAL: OK, so I'm in Greensboro for the next few days, and it was cold last night. That seems to be a recurring theme for me these days. And yes, I know it's winter time. However, I kinda sorta expected it to be a little bit warmer down south than it has been. Go figure. Anyway, since I have a full day ahead of me, I can't be wasting my time. Hehehe Enjoy the song from the "Don't Be A Menace..." soundtrack. Do you even remember this song? LOL
"Can't Fight This Feeling," REO Speedwagon, The Hits, Sony Records, 2002
THE DEAL: On the road again. This time it's North Carolina for a few days, which definitely isn't L.A., or next week's trip to N.O. But still, I'm looking forward to seeing the students and seeing what this campus is all about. But still, I can't fight this feeling that I'd rather stay asleep. LOL Check the song by REO Speedwagon this morning, as we remove "can't" from our collective vocabulary. Peace.
"Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Columbia/Ruffhouse Records, 1998
THE DEAL: It's a new week, I'm back in New York for the day, and I'm getting rid of all negative energy. How shall I start, you ask? By erasing the word "can't" from my vocabulary. But not before playing a week full of songs with the word in them. How's that for purging? Today's joint is from Lauryn, who just had ANOTHER child. Guess she's another one who removed "can't" from her vocabulary. *snark*
"Love and Basketball," New Line Home Cinema, 2000
THE DEAL: It's Sunday Slam time, so I figured, in honor of "Anti-Love" week AND the NBA All-Star Game, I'd post a video clip from the movie Love and Basketball. I'm on my way back to NYC today, after one of the best trips to L.A. I've experienced. Didn't get a chance to see a lot of my homies, but still ... all in all, not a bad way to spend "Anti-Love" week. Next stop, Greensboro, NC. It never stops like a Brand New Heavies record. :)
"Love You Like I Did," 112, Room 112, Bad Boy Records, 1998
THE DEAL: OK, It's Saturday, and really, I'm in a good place today. Sure, I had no Valentine, but I did have two full hours of Jill Scott. I had no love to speak of, but I did meet Sanaa Lathan and shake Ruby Dee's hand. So all in all, ain't nobody had a better week than I did. :) With that in mind, here's some 112 making the young lady know that ain't nobody gonna do it to 'em like they did. Nope.
"Love Shoulda Brought You Home," Toni Braxton, Toni Braxton, LaFace Records, 1993
THE DEAL: This is what I was singing to Jill Scott this morning, after seeing her rip up the stage at the Gibson Amphitheater herr in LA last night. She was phenomenal, and almost made me forgo the "Anti-Love" week theme just to post one of her songs. However, I'm nothing if not loyal, and Jilly won't want me to betray the theme I live for, would she? I think not. Anyway, here's a scoop for you: Jill is dating her drummer. His name is John Roberts. He's black with a mohawk. There, don't say I never gave you anything. I will now go cook some rocks. Grrrr.
"Love Don't Love Me," Eric Benet, The Brothers Soundtrack, Warner Bros. Music, 2001
THE DEAL: Happy "Anti-Love" Day!!! Here's my anthem for the occasion -- Eric Benet's ode to "oh, well". LOL To all of those who aren't exactly enjoying today for whatever reason, this song is for you. Us. Everybody. I just made it to L.A. around midnight, so I'm a little loopy. Tonight is the Image Awards and the Jill Scott show! Woo hooo! So even though it's Anti-Love Day, it should be alright. I'm muddle through. hehehe
